17- - Coursework Example To clarify the previous, this choice gives House the would like to demonstrate his guiltlessness in the lights of the new evidance, that is on the off chance that he is honest in any case. Not at all like as in an intrigue, in habeas corpus government court, DNA tests can be created for this situation as another proof which can enormously impact the choice of the Judges if the proof goes in Houses’ favor. Presently to see the impact of this choice on the general public all in all, a typical resident would have more trust in the Judicial System and would realize that he has an incredible possibility of demonstrating his blamelessness whenever indicted wrongly. The Judicial System throughout the years has been antagonistically influenced by the virus war between the moderate and liberal governments. This pattern has not permitted consistency to win in the Judicial System. This new choice gives an expectation that the decisions made by the legal executive would nor be moderate nor liberal, but instead would be simply. This choice by Justice Kennedy would be alluded to by lawful specialists while understanding instances of such nature. To those sentenced wrongly, this choice would appear to them as a beam of light prompting a free life. Regardless of whether House advances out or not as a result of this choice, it absolutely would allow sentenced individuals to demonstrate their honesty introducing new confirmations later on. In my own view, the less-moderate choice made by the preservationist judge is the correct one, as it probably won't be conceivable in specific cases to assemble and deliver all or the essential proof during the time for testing. Giving the sentenced another opportunity for delivering new proof and contending out naturally, can't be named an indulgent choice on part of the indicted, yet rather a reasonable one. In spite of the fact that this would prompt extra weight on the courts, however it would guarantee that equity is served. Arrangements have been made in the law to give a

Art Craft in Nikolay Gogol’s “The Portrait” Essay Example For Students

Craftsmanship Craft in Nikolay Gogol’s â€Å"The Portrait† Essay The short story of N. V. Gogol â€Å"The Portrait† is based on the restriction of craftsmanship and art ideas to one another. Numerous Gogolists noticed this in their works. The resistance of these two ideas emerges from the earliest starting point. Pictures in the shop, where Tchartkoff coincidentally meandered, cause deference of the individuals and the specialists perplexity. He genuinely doesn't comprehend what precisely pulls in the individuals in these basic pictures, in which everything is personified, impossible, conscious, brutal. The hero intellectually named them, â€Å"simple bluntness, consistent going insufficiency, which remained, through self-will, in the positions of art† The Portrait. With his craftsman sense, Tchartkoff grabs from the all likeness really scenes †it is no fortuitous event that he stops before the picture of the elderly person and freezes. Still not associating that, before him isn't exactly a normal work, Tchartkoff feels the intensity of the brush of the craftsman who painted the picture. The idea of these photos contrasts, the nature of the motivation itself, by the desire of which they were made. Inventiveness (pictorial, melodic, compositional, scholarly) †is a sort of endeavor to conquer disharmony, emerging because of inner logical inconsistencies of an individual or dismissal of the encompassing reality. While making a work, a creator changes his tormenting questions in aesthetic pictures, occupied with a discourse with himself and the recipient. Workmanship is intended to fit the human spirit (a writer and a likely peruser) and its encompassing reality, that is the reason genuine gems are constantly great and agreeable in the solidarity of all their auxiliary components. This is the principle contrast from graphomaniac tests in the abstract, from music, fulfills the simple solicitations of the majority, works of art made by request †based on what is presently called mainstream society, pop, kitsch. Workmanship †the imaginative drive of the spirit; create †a methods for acquiring. Craftsmanship is alive naturally; make, ostensibly imagined by inventiveness, †dead. The maker ordinarily, Tchartkoff gets precisely this distinction. In any case, to feel, get imagination, be gifted and serve expressions of the human experience †not something very similar. Tchartkoff loses his exceptional capacities in quest for style, cash, acclaim. When life gets stood up to him with a decision of craftsmanship or art, he picks the second. The radiance of his ability step by step blurs away. Toward the finish of the initial segment of the story we are confronted with an irate man, who comprehends that he has traded his ability for a rich life and respects, where, to his lament, an ability couldn’t be created †an excessive amount of diverting vanity. Likewise, riches and acclaim give comfort, dull the faculties, exacerbated in troublesome circumstances. The capacity of fragile sensibilities and familiarity with the defect of reality makes disharmony some degree fundamental for the imaginative procedure. Tchartkoff can not avoid the enticement and gets himself a popularity and magnificence for cash, which dropped free from the edge of a puzzling picture. At the first run through, his endowment of the craftsman despite everything makes itself felt: Tchartkoff attempts not exclusively to satisfy orders, yet to make †he appreciates working, with a perishing breath he gets the shades, doesn't see how time is running. Be that as it may, the woman who requested the picture wouldn't like to perceive what it truly is, she needs her little girl to appear as something else, not equivalent to throughout everyday life: without somewhat yellowish skin, without a faintly noticeable blue under her eyes, without dim spots all over. At the end of the day, the client wishes her little girl to become â€Å"an absolute,† flawlessness. Be that as it may, the outer flawlessness is cold and dead, it doesn't get alive, nurturing. It doesn't become craftsmanship. Tchartkoff attempts to oppose, looks to give the picture greater similitude with the first, But less to stay devoted to his calling, as â€Å"lest any one ought to blame him for real undeniable sweet talk. † The Portrait. Right now, when he is taking a shot at the principal custom request, Tchartkoff is by all accounts at a junction. Being, similar to the saint of â€Å"The Queen of Spades,† at the junction, Tchartkoff picks one of the two potential ways. A speedy achievement doesn't bring him satisfaction, it is a hallucination, a figment that disintegrates to tidy when contrasted with genuine craftsmanship. Sent from Italy, the work by one of Tchartkoffs companions of youth strikes him, yet in addition all no matter what: When Tchartkoff went into the room, he found a horde of guests previously gathered before the image. The most significant quietness, for example, once in a while settles upon a crowd of pundits, ruled over all. Undertakings Of Huck Finn Estimation EssayTchartkoffs story is just the initial segment of the story, from which we adapt practically nothing about the picture itself, gained by a youthful craftsman. We don't have a clue who is delineated in the representation, how the picture winds up in the shop, where Tchartkoff meandered, when and by whom it was painted. The main thing that can be stated, †that the representation was painted by a genuine Artist: â€Å"Dusty and ruined as the picture might have been, Tchartkoff saw, when he had prevailing with regards to expelling the soil from the face, hints of crafted by an extraordinary craftsman. The representation gave off an impression of being incomplete, yet the intensity of the dealing with was striking. The Portrait. One thing shocks: the picture is likewise a show-stopper, why there is no longing in it, an inward inclination to amicability, for what reason does it incite begrudge, outrage, demolition? The image is unordinary, odd, â€Å"They (the eyes) decently looked out of the representation, wrecking its agreement with their odd exuberance. † The Portrait. There is no concordance in the picture, despite the fact that it is composed by a capable craftsman. In any case, the ace who made it, says: â€Å"I will just say that I painted him with offensiveness: I felt no preference for my work, even at that point. I attempted to constrain myself, and, smothering each feeling in a cruel way, to be consistent with nature. † The Portrait. The representation delineates a gombeen-man (this, just as the historical backdrop of the making of the picture, is told in the second piece of the story), having an abnormal dim power, â€Å"That’s how I should paint the Devil! † The Portrait †the craftsman considers the elderly person. The fallen angels power, encased in a representation outline, crushes the congruity of the image. Crafted by craftsmanship quits being incredible, the representation turns out to be just a window through which the powers of malevolence can discover ones route into the world. The representation of a gombeen-man wrecks not just its own agreement, amicability of one picture, however it appears to oppose craftsmanship when all is said in done: in the initial segment of the story it discloses to us the narrative of the demolished ability of Tchartkoff, in the second †the account of the maker of the picture, his battle with the villains power, which subjugated his will and ability: dealing with an image for the congregation, he had presented the usurers eyes to all the figures. The Portrait. The polluted power claims the craftsmen soul, he can not dispose of its impact. The wicked power in â€Å"The Portrait† isn't underhanded †it urgently and bleakly attempts to crush the Artist, forestall to carry congruity to the world that came out under his brush. For some time, virtuoso and craftsmanship are oppressed by the fiends power. In any case, the genuine craftsmanship and the longing for concordance in it are as yet more grounded. Consistent with his job, the craftsman moves from the common vanity, lives as a plain, finally arrived at illumination, makes a magnificent picture: â€Å"At the year's end the image was prepared. It was an extremely brilliant work. Neither earlier nor brethren thought a lot about artwork; however all were hit with the wonderful blessedness of the figures. † The Portrait. In this way, a genuine craftsman, consistent with his business and way can be broken for some time by the malevolent soul, yet to defeat †never. The epic â€Å"The Portrait† by Nikolay Gogol †the account of two specialists which have been tried by the insidious enticement: Tchartkoff by magnificence and cash, the maker of the picture by the capacity to depict â€Å"the soul of murkiness. † One of them stays consistent with himself and serves expressions of the human experience, the other †loses his ability, and afterward himself. You have ability: ability is the most inestimable of God’s gifts† The Portrait, Ð ° â€Å"An insinuation of God’s glorious heaven is contained for the craftsman in art† The Portrait, consequently workmanship is most importantly, more grounded than the demons power. It doesn't endure a particular pursue of distinction, cash, achievement, it requires difficult work and weakening of the ace in his work, full inundation in innovativeness. Workmanship invigorates oppose pulverization and wickedness, to withstand the fallen angels enticement. It assists with safeguarding or reestablish concordance in the spirit of the maker and individuals.

This series will help you to expand your academic vocabulary using the Academic Word List or the AWL, which is a list thats readily accessible on the web. This core academic vocabulary is used by writers in many subject areas. Learning vocabulary from the AWL will help you to improve your comprehension of academic texts. Cath Anne: [00:01:23] Also, feel free to come back to these videos when you feel it is necessary or you need a reminder of the various words we discuss. One way of learning new vocabulary is to learn a new word from the list every day. But, it is also better to learn the words and context so that you will understand how they are used so that means learning them in the context of a sentence. Cath Anne: [00:01:50] Before we jump into the content this week just a quick reminder to join me on live on Instagram and Facebook live every Thursday at 7:00p.m. Eastern Standard Time. We will be doing a live Q and A and study session. So, bring your homework and any questions that you may have and we will try to help you out for with any assignments that you do have. Cath Anne: [00:02:15] OK. So, lets get into the content. Just a reminder that we encourage you to pause the video at any time to take notes. This will help you to retain the information that we discuss. Cath Anne: [00:02:27] So, this week we will wrap up this series by giving you another five common academic words. In this session like the other sessions we will be discussing the word, the part of speech (whether it is a noun, verb, or adjective), and the meaning of the word. Then, of course, we will put the word into a sentence, so you can get a sense of the word in context. This is to get the meaning of the word, but also to retain the information and memorize the word. Cath Anne: [00:03:02] Lets begin. So, the first word for this week is occur. Occur is a verb. It means when something happens or takes place. So, for example, We could say tourism only occurs during the summer in the small town. Summer is the only time tourism occurs because it is such a small town. That is when tourism happens or takes place. Occur. Cath Anne: [00:03:46] The next word is potential. Potential can be a noun or an adjective and we will discuss both. It means something that could possibly happen but might not come to pass. Cath Anne: [00:04:25] For example, sing it as a noun, we could say, He is an intelligent student and he has a potential to get into medical school. Cath Anne: [00:04:36] Getting into medical school is something that is likely to happen because he is an intelligent student but, it might not come to pass. He has the potential. Used an adjective we could say, Many potential customers are waiting for a fall in prices before buying a house. So, in other words, the customers are potential because they may be customers, but it may not come to pass that they are customers. So, in this case the word potential is an adjective because it is describing the word customers. Cath Anne: [00:05:19] The next word we have this week is primary. It is an adjective. This means the first of importance. There are a couple of synonyms for primary such as chief or principal. It just means first of importance, first in line for importance. So, we could say, The primary reason for getting an F on the exam was a lack of studying. There were other factors involved a lack of sleep, busy at a job family issues, but the primary issue was a lack of studying. Cath Anne: [00:06:19] Number four is the word range. This is a noun. Cath Anne: [00:06:37] This refers to the upper and lower limits that a number, an amount, or type of something may vary. So, for example we could say, The price range for our car is between 2000 and 4000. 2000 is the lower limit and 4000 is the upper limit and the space between is in the range. Cath Anne: [00:07:07] Number five this week is significant. Possibly one of my favorite words. It is an adjective that means something of importance or something of consequence. So, for example we could say, Taking the time to study is significant in helping you to attain a higher grade. So, the process of studying is a factor that is significant in you getting a good grade on your test or in your academic career. Cath Anne: [00:08:02] So, there we have it folks. Habits and Traits of Darkling Beetles

The family Tenebrionidae, the darkling beetles, is one of the largest beetle families. The family name comes from the Latin tenebrio, meaning one who loves darkness. People raise darkling beetle larvae, known as mealworms, as food for birds, reptiles, and other animals. Description Most darkling beetles look similar to ground beetles, black or brown and smooth. Theyre often found hiding under rocks or leaf litter and will come to light traps. Darkling beetles are primarily scavengers. The larvae are sometimes called false wireworms because they look like click beetle larvae (which are known as wireworms). Though the Tenebrionidae family is quite large, numbering close to 15,000 species, all darkling beetles share certain characteristics. They have 5 visible abdominal sternites, the first of which is not divided by coxae (as in the ground beetles). The antennae usually have 11 segments and may be filiform  or moniliform. Their eyes are notched. The tarsal formula is 5-5-4. Classification Kingdom: AnimaliaPhylum: ArthropodaClass: InsectaOrder: ColeopteraFamily: Tenebrionidae Diet Most darkling beetles (adults and larvae) scavenge on plant matter of some kind, including stored grains and flour. Some species feed on fungi, dead insects, or even dung. Life Cycle Like all beetles, darkling beetles undergo complete metamorphosis with four stages of development: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Female darkling beetles deposit their eggs in the soil. Larvae are worm-like, with slender, elongated bodies. Pupation usually occurs in the soil. Special Adaptations and Defenses When disturbed, many darkling beetles will emit a foul-smelling liquid to dissuade predators from dining on them. Members of the genus Eleodes engage in a somewhat bizarre defensive behavior when threatened. Eleodes beetles raise their abdomens high in the air, so they almost appear to be standing on their heads, while fleeing the suspected danger. Range and Distribution Darkling beetles live worldwide, in both temperate and tropical habitats. The family Tenebrionidae is one of the largest in the beetle order, with well over 15,000 species known. In North America, darkling beetles are most diverse and abundant in the west. Scientists have described 1,300 western species, but only around 225 eastern Tenebrionids. Nuclear Power Vs Coal Burning Environmental Sciences Essay Free Essays

string(80) " supply to the hottest portion of the burning chamber where the coal is burned\." Nuclear and coal discharged power Stationss provided about half of the electricity generated in the UK in 2007. Figure 1 shows a dislocation of the parts made by all of the beginnings of fuel used to bring forth electricity in that twelvemonth. Figure 1: Fuel used for UK electricity coevals on an end product footing in 2007 [ 1 ] . We will write a custom essay sample on Nuclear Power Vs Coal Burning Environmental Sciences Essay or any similar topic only for you Order Now Coal is an cheap fuel that is comparatively easy to mine and the UK still has big militias. In 2001 the universe militias of recoverable coal were 1083 billion metric tons which is adequate to last over 200 old ages at current World ingestion degrees. [ 2 ] Unlike oil and gas, the bulk of which is concentrated in the politically sensitive country of the Middle East, the largest militias of coal are in North America, Russia, China and India. Nuclear power Stationss use comparatively little sums of fuel compared to char, so uranium can be easy stock piled. Known uranium stocks are merely plenty for approximately 50 to sixty old ages at current ingestion degrees. However, much of the U is available from less sensitive parts such as Australia, Canada and the United States, { see Appendix 1 } . Nuclear workss are powered by enriched uranium pellets. To guarantee continuation of electricity supply, up to 100 dozenss of pellets may be stored at each reactor at any clip. Each one inch pellet can bring forth the same sum of energy as one ton of coal [ 3 ] . This is because power station class coal has a calorific value of about 26 GJ/tonne and U has a calorific value of between 420,000 and 672,000 GJ/tonne i.e. about 20,000 times as big. [ 4 ] The mean thermic efficiency for atomic workss in the UK in 2005 was 38 % [ 5 ] . The newest coal engineering can accomplish about 48 % efficiency [ 6 ] . For comparing, typical efficiencies for the assorted ways of bring forthing electricity in the UK are shown in Appendix 2. Nuclear and coal discharged power Stationss work in much the same manner. Water is heated to do steam which turns turbines connected to generators which produce electrical power. The difference is that in atomic power Stationss a concatenation reaction is used to do the heat alternatively of firing coal. Nuclear power workss create heat through the fission of U atoms that are split by slow traveling neutrons bring forthing tremendous sums of energy. Figure 2 shows the basic designs of ( a ) dodo fuel workss and ( B ) atomic workss. Figure 2 Comparison of typical designs of fossil fuel and atomic workss [ 7 ] With coal fired Stationss the immediate pollution job is air borne atoms. The ash produced in the burning chamber besides presents a major waste control job because of the immense sums created. For illustration, a 1000MW coal fired station produces about 400,000 metric tons of ash per twelvemonth [ 8 ] . Whereas, 12,000 metric tons of waste is generated by all of the universe ‘s atomic reactors per twelvemonth. [ 8a ] Nuclear power workss do non bring forth the air pollution associated with coal, but the spent fuel is a risky waste that can stay a radioactive menace for 1000s of old ages. The fact that the atomic station needs a containment edifice to envelop the reactors highlights the possible danger of atomic power. The containment edifice has a strengthened concrete shell lined with steel which acts as a radiation shield to forestall any release of radiation in the event of an accident. It is designed to be strong plenty to defy temblors, aircraft impacts and sabotage efforts. The three major events that have slowed the advancement of the atomic industry worldwide are the Windscale fire of 1957, the Three Mile Island partial reactor meltdown in 1979, and the more serious Chernobyl reactor meltdown in 1986. The incidents showed the demand for a containment edifice because with the Three Mile Island accident the radioactive dust was successfully contained. Whereas, the Chernobyl and Windscale reactors did non hold a containment edifice which resulted in big countries of the environing countryside being contaminated by radioactive dust. The Windscale incident was on a much smaller graduated table than Chernobyl with a thousand times less radioactive Iodine 131 being released. [ 9 ] In all of the incidents hapless on the job patterns, faulty or unequal equipment and complacence about safety issues were involved. These incidents and the tremendous cost of decommissioning the reactors has meant that for many old ages at that place have been no programs to construct any more atomic reactors in the UK. Coal fired power workss have been associated with smog, acerb rain and planetary heating. They besides release metals such as quicksilver, arsenic, Be, Cd, lead and Se which can be deposited on dirt, in lakes and in watercourses where they become long term environmental pollutants. Gass associated with firing coal include C dioxide, the chief nursery gas blamed for planetary heating and clime alteration ; sulfur dioxide which can do acerb rain ; and N oxides which are responsible for ground-level ozone. Particulate affair, which includes dust, carbon black, nitrates and sulfates is besides emitted doing respiratory jobs and asthma onslaughts. Natural coal besides contains trace sums of radioactive U and Th. This is non a job until coal is burned bring forthing fly ash, which concentrates the original degrees of U and Th by a factor of 10. Surprisingly, ‘the fly ash emitted by a power works carries into the environing environment 100 times more radiation than a atomic power works bring forthing the same sum of energy ‘ . [ 10 ] The environmental jobs associated with coal have led to a push for ‘clean coal ‘ steps to restrict emanations and to capture the CO2. For illustration, fluke gas desulphurisation systems can take up 99 % of the sulfur dioxide. The procedure besides produces gypsum which is used in the building industry. Nitrogen oxides are controlled utilizing particular burners which cut down the O supply to the hottest portion of the burning chamber where the coal is burned. You read "Nuclear Power Vs Coal Burning Environmental Sciences Essay" in category "Essay examples" Electrostatic precipitators can take more than 99 % of the particulates from the fluke gas by making a charge on the atoms which are so attracted by aggregation home bases. Fabric filters and wet particulate scrubbers are besides used. As CO2 is a nursery gas the proposed method is to capture the gas and shop it underground before it can get away to the ambiance. Figure 3 shows an illustrations of how a CO2 gaining control system might be used. Key 1. CO2 pumped into obsolete coal Fieldss displaces methane which can be used as fuel 2. Carbon dioxide can be pumped into and stored safely in saline aquifers 3. CO2 pumped into oil Fieldss helps keep force per unit area, doing extraction easier Figure 3 Options for informations gaining control and storage The construct of C gaining control and storage has been proven by little scale systems but commercially feasible large-scale systems have non yet been developed. Coal mines can be unsafe and soiled topographic points and unfastened dramatis personae excavation in peculiar can go forth an unpleasant landscape. Coal mineworkers can be affected by pneumonoconiosis, or black lung disease, and emphysema if they breathe in excessively much of the coal dust. Transporting coal by lorry and train from the mine to the power station causes pollution. As the older coal fired and atomic power Stationss reach the terminal of their utile lives, determinations will hold to be made about their replacing. Should atomic or coal be considered for the following coevals of power Stationss in the UK? In an ideal universe the reply would likely be no ; but in the existent universe the concerns of authoritiess are energy security and supplying a uninterrupted supply of electricity at a sensible monetary value. Therefore, it is likely that one or both will play a important portion in the proviso of base burden electricity for the foreseeable hereafter because feasible options are non yet available. The instance for atomic power must get down by sing the fact that installed safety systems have non prevented three major atomic accidents in the last 50 old ages. No 1 could give a 100 % confidence that a major catastrophe will non go on in the hereafter ; but the atomic industry has been scrutinised more than any other industry in history and hence the safety steps are as near to state-of-the-art as possible. Progresss in nanotechnology may bring forth better control and feeling devices to farther better safety steps. In recent old ages ‘while the agreements for storage have proved to be satisfactory and the installations have been operated without major jobs, it is by and large agreed that these agreements are interim, that is, they do non stand for a concluding and lasting solution ‘ . [ 12 ] However, work on atomic transubstantiation, that can potentially cut down the clip that the waste is unsafe from 1000s of old ages to possibly five hundred old ages, [ 8a ] , may do it more toothsome. Nanotechnology research into disassemblers may bring forth applications in atomic risky waste direction. Coal generated power is a good established engineering that people are familiar with. However, it has a repute for being a dirty industry that can be unsafe for its workers and bring forth a visually unpleasant environment. In recent old ages the clime alteration argument has intensified and coal, which produces the most greenhouse gases of the fossil fuels, has been targeted as a major cause of planetary heating. The efforts to clean up the industry will potentially cut down the job but will be dearly-won and may take many old ages to demo any betterments. One factor that may work in its favor is the recent discrediting of scientists look intoing clime alteration. Allegations were made that ‘climate scientists had doctored informations to show that worlds are responsible for planetary heating ‘ and ‘the universe ‘s most of import administration for supervising clime alteration claimed that the Himalayan glaciers would vanish by 2035 without the backup of peer-reviewed research ‘ . [ 11 ] This has allowed advocates of coal fired Stationss to propose that the instance for planetary heating has been overstated and that coal and other dodo fuelled power Stationss may be acceptable after all. China, India and other developing states are likely to be constructing 100s of coal fired power Stationss in the close hereafter. If the clime alteration anteroom has got it right it would look irresponsible for the UK to add to the job. Furthermore, a new coevals of atomic power Stationss would assist the UK authorities to run into its mark of cutting nursery gas emanations by 80 % by 2050. There is grounds that determinations are being made within authorities to unclutter the way for new atomic power Stationss. [ ] hypertext transfer protocol: //www.guardian.co.uk/environment/blog/2010/jul/27/decc-carbon-calculator } } . The trust on imported gas from some of the universe ‘s most unstable parts is considered unacceptable and favorable remarks associating to atomic power coevals have been made. The most recent grounds is EDF Energy uncovering programs to pass ?1billion in 2011 on new contracts and readying work for the Hinkley Point atomic power station in Somerset. [ ] { 13/02/11 Mail on Sunday Tom McGhie } After due consideration, I would give probationary support to a revitalized atomic industry in the UK working under the strictest of examination. I would trust that the major technological jobs with the handling of risky atomic waste will be solved in the close hereafter. Besides, if atomic power coevals receives more public credence, research into the fast breeder reactors and the long term end of power from atomic merger may have a encouragement. These developments would ease the waste job and do atomic power more sustainable in the long term. Paris, the Trojan Prince

Paris, the Trojan Prince Before there was a celebrity named Paris or a city of lights sharing the name (see II), there was another famous Paris connected with the most famous war in history. Paris (Alexandros/Alexander) was the son of King Priam of Troy and Queen Hecuba. Hecuba had a dream about the great trouble her unborn child would cause, so when Paris was born, instead of raising him, she ordered him exposed on Mt. Ida. Normally exposure of an infant meant death, but Paris was lucky. He was suckled by a she-bear, then raised to adulthood by a shepherd. (If this sounds familiar, it should. In Romes founding legend, the twins Romulus and Remus were suckled by a wild she-wolf, and then raised by a shepherd.) Discord, in an act worthy of her name, gave a golden apple to the most beautiful goddess, but neglected to name her. She left that choice to the goddesses, but they couldnt decide among themselves. When they couldnt prevail upon Zeus to decide who was most beautiful, they turned to Paris. The 3 goddesses vying for the honor were Athena, Hera, and Aphrodite. Each goddess offered something of great value as a bribe to make Paris name her as the most beautiful. Paris might have made his choice based on looks, but he chose the beauty goddess Aphrodite for her bribe. She rewarded him by making the most beautiful mortal, Helen, wife of Menelaus, fall in love with him. Paris then abducted Helen and took her to Troy, thereby starting the Trojan War. Death of Paris In the war, Paris (Achilles killer) was fatally wounded by one of Hercules arrows. Ptolemy Hephaestion (Ptolemaeus Chennus) says Menelaus killed Paris. Philoctetes died bitten by a serpent and Alexander was killed by Menelaus with a blow of the spear in his thigh.Photius (9th century Byzantine patriarch) Bibliotheca - Epitome of Ptolemy Hephaestion

Critically evaluate Direct payments in relation to Personalisation Essay

Critically evaluate Direct payments in relation to Personalisation - Essay Example When one has the power of choosing and the power of control, it will hence lead to the life of a person to be in the best state (Barron 2010, p.57). Moreover, due to pay down assists in the privatisation policy, many other critical factors are brought into the light. Factors such as trying to ensure a proper and global proximity to both the societal and services that are termed as free by the government are considered (Bornat 2008, p.67). Others such as the intervening and also the early processes of intervening, the growth and also the continuous producing of services in social societies, and also the sector that does involve social care, trying to improve the levels of access to vital information, and also the guidance of all persons, who do utilise this primary social care amenities. This is irrespective of how they are planned to get their funding, and achieving recognition and other supportive aspects of this field (Hazel 2011, p.34). Direct payments which in short form are termed as DPs, are payments in cash form, that are paid to a person, for which they are now able to manage and also make designs of customized help so as to be able to obtain their various needs that are pertain able to social care (Glasby 2009, p.23). Therefore, the channel that submits funds for direct payments, originates from the authorities locally. Even though direct payments have always been present since the year 1996, they are currently one of the many choices that persons who are hence availed for a personal budget (Rogowski 2010, p.87). It is hence evident and without argument that, the number of persons who utilise direct payments as a want, has with time grown constantly from 50 to 3373, from the years 2002 to the year 2008. It is also observable that, the numbers of persons who utilise direct payments, from the year 2007 to 2008, have increased in terms of per cent, roughly rising by 61%. Certificate of Need (CON) Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Certificate of Need (CON) - Case Study Example The CON is crucial in the clinical setting in that it evaluates the competing interests and boost economic value. Without the CON, it is evident that the health care environment would be a free market with open competition. Challenges would emerge when making decisions and expanding medical services. As an outside consultant, I seek to evaluate the diversity issues in this case study and their impact in the clinical setting. The advantage of this position is that it lays a strong ground to be open-minded when giving out the solutions on what should be done to enhance quality care. However, the main challenge is that one does not have the power to make decisions that affects the organization. With this, the chief administrator would be in a better position to oversee what is going on in the organization and implement decisions that enhance the organization’s success. Diversity Issues and their impact The case in consideration is the open heart surgery, which is a highly profita ble service that profits Pennsylvania. From 1996-1997 to 2007-2009, Pennsylvania increased the number of hospitals offering open heart surgery. Despite the progress made, the number of procedures made in the state decreased by 37%. The change attributed to less usage of clinical facilities, skilled surgical teams, and cardiothoracic surgeons. The issue was so severe that it contributed to the termination of three hospitals, which are Medical College of Pennsylvania, Episcopal Hospital, and Graduate Hospital. The main question that emerges from this case is why so many open heart programs would be launched despite the face of declining market. Major Problems and Issue In my opinion, open heart programs would be launched because they bring profit to the organization. As previously mentioned, open heart surgery is a highly profitable service that supports many hospitals. Nevertheless, opening many heart programs in the face of declining market would lead to economic depression. Most ho spitals may not be in a position to meet their financial goals and objectives. The machines used on these programs are costly. Thus, it is important to understand the market before launching or adding them. This would prevent economic problems that eventually may hinder the successful running of the organization (Jonas, & Kovner, 2011). Organizational Strengths and Weaknesses Although the new programs were justified to bring income, the truth of the matter is that there was no market analysis conducted prior to launching the programs. The organization fails to recognize the negative effects that would emerge from launching open heart programs in the face of the declining market. As documented in the case study, the change of these programs resulted into less efficient utilization of clinical facilities and highly skilled surgical teams. In other words, it affected the entire work performance and productivity of the organization. Because of economic depression caused by programs laun ched, the Philadelphia experienced a number of changed such as the closure of three known hospitals. Alternatives and Resolution To rationalize the number of programs in an open and free market I would embrace the CON in effort to increase the access of many hospitals to use the programs. The CON would help to improve quality in major health care services, and in turn this would boost the planning and resource development of the hospital. The services I would recommend this organization to embrace in the CON is preparing, revising, and reviewing rules and regulation for the analysis of medical services application. It is also important to conduct special studies and projects on the major k health issues with special improvement in the

Al Qaeda Counterculture

Al Qaeda Counterculture Timothy Murray A counterculture is a subculture that rejects the major values of the large society replaces them with a new set of cultural patterns (Thomas). Al Qaeda is an extremist group that believed in killing civilians to fill sacrificial religious reasons to their God. Al Qaeda is considered a counterculture because the views they have on life do not fit the norms that many other societies share. In other words, they reject the views of the common society and think that they are superior to all. Al Qaedas views on man-made law or what are commonly known as just laws, are they need to be replaced with Sharia laws which are much more strict. The term Al Qaeda can be translated into common English as the base (The Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica). Al Qaeda was founded by Osama bin Laden and Abdullah Azzam in 1988. The members of Al Qaeda strongly believe that a Christian-Jewish conspiracy is trying be the demise of Islam. In the early 1990s Al Qaeda operated out of the country of Yemen (Hull). They have come forward and claimed responsibility for the 1998 U.S Embassy bombings, the September 11th attacks on the world trade center, the 2002 Bali bombings and many others. In May of 2011 the leader of Al Qaeda, Osama bin Laden was assassinated by U.S militant forces after finding him hiding out in a secure compound (The Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica). Al Qaeda has also been found in plotting to assassinate many of the worlds leaders and bombing many of the worlds most well-known locations just to try and affect the lives of thousands. The sociological perspective can be defined as viewing of the behavior of groups in a systematic way and sociological imagination is the ability to see the connection between the larger world and our personal lives (Thomas R18). A good example of how Al Qaeda demonstrated the sociological perspective is how well they planned and acted out the attacks on the World Trade Centers in New York City on September 11th, 2001. Members of Al Qaeda were training on how to fly our commercial airlines and had a very detailed list of all the actions they needed to do in order to successfully act out the attack. The way the government went through and viewed everything after this event was painstaking because they had to go through and put an explanation on everything they came across. The sociological imagination is demonstrated by thinking about how Al Qaeda has effected thousands of lives after the 9/11 attacks. When you dig down deep and think about the way the view life, in their eyes maybe we are the counterculture. By looking at Al Qaeda through a sociological imagination you can see how many may say that they will not be affected by Al Qaeda but in all reality it may not affect them it may affect their children or their grandchildren. Ethnocentrism is the tendency to view ones own culture and group as superior to all other cultures and groups (Thomas R12). The larger society views Al Qaeda as a counterculture because to them they are an extremist group that murders innocent people and themselves as a sacrifice to their God. When Al Qaeda attacked the United States on September 11th in many psychologists and sociologists viewed this as an act of ethnocentrism because they think that they are far superior than we were. The way that the United States has gone about trying to resolve the issues behind that attacks makes it seem as though we think that we are far superior than any other country or culture. Cultural relativism is the believe that a culture should be judged by their own standards (Thomas R11). By understanding why Al Qaeda militants act out their attacks and why they may become a suicide bomber you will find that thy believe that in the eyes of their God they are doing the right thing to get to the next level of power and respect. In 1994 Al Qaeda plotted to assassinate Pope John Paul II during a trip to Manila (Global Security Editors). By knowing that Al Qaeda believes that a Christian-Jewish will be the demise of Islam, it make sense as to why they would want to assassinate the Pope that being that they believe the Christian-Jewish views will be the demise of Islam. In my own opinion I do not agree with Al Qaedas philosophy. I do not agree with their philosophy because I feel as though they are too extreme in the way that they combat their opposing views. There are so many other ways that you can go about things rather than simply trying to kill someone or trying to blow things up simply because they do not share the same views that you do. Someone on the cultural relativism side of an argument would say that you cannot judge simply because you do not understand their views; where someone arguing ethnocentrism would say that it does not matter their views they should not be killing themselves to show their God they are worthy and their religion is far superior then any other. You need to look at Al Qaeda through a sociological imagination because you will see how they connect the larger world to your own life. To view Al Qaeda in a systematic way you would be using the sociological perspective which is used in many of Al Qaedas attacks. References Global Security Editors. Globalsecurity.org. 2 March 2017. Multicultural Education Essay

Multicultural Education is becoming important in our society, because of the big social change in the United States; Americans have been forced to look at the cultural change in the schools. We have had to address multicultural education and the educational needs of our students which continue to be a struggle for educators. Multicultural education programs could be put into three categories. Content-focused, student focused, and socially focused. Content-focused is known to be the most common type of multicultural educational. The students are taught in the curriculum about different cultures. For example holidays. Student-focused programs address the academic needs of the minority groups of students. This approach helps the students integrate into the main stream of the school system. Socially focused programs are designed to develop knowledge among the different cultures in our schools. There are different learning Styles. Every student that comes in your classroom gains and uses the information in different ways: this is done by seeing, hearing, touching, analyzing. As our students are different so are the teaching styles which also may vary from person to person. I have learnt that if a teacher does not try to understand the students in their class there will be a problem passing on the knowledge to their students. and the students will become bored if they are not interested in the subject, it is up to the teacher to make it interesting so they can reach all students. I feel as a teacher you should try to incorporate a variety of different teaching styles into your lessons to help engage all students that will enable them to learn more effectively. Philosophy of Education  I believe that each child is special and they need a secure, caring, and stimulating environment in which to grow and mature emotionally, intellectually, physically, and socially. As an educator it is my duty to help students meet their full potential, and this can be done in by providing an environment that is safe, orderly, and invites a sharing of ideas. There are three ways that will help create such an environment in the classroom. †¢ the teacher acting as a guide †¢ allowing the child’s natural curiosity to direct his/her learning †¢ Promoting respect for all things and all people. The teacher’s role is to guide their students. If we give our student’s access to hands-on activities and allow them enough time to use materials that will reinforce the lesson we are teaching it will creates an opportunity for the students to find the information for themselves. Student life in school and at home Students usually separate their lives into different areas, doing the same things they do at home, and school. The things students learn during these various life stages will eventually be the foundation from which they can build their careers. Most students need to develop the skills they learn that they will use in their future professions. Almost every student in school will learn that the only way to get assignments done on time is by managing their time effectively. The Transition from elementary school to college is difficult for students, as they have to become independent quickly. Today’s classroom Class sizes have become too big in the America school system, and the people making the decisions are taking out the paraprofessionals that help the teachers in the classrooms. In my personal opinion I feel that the classrooms are overcrowded and this extends from the elementary schools to the high schools. Classes used to be smaller and the student teacher ratio helped achieve greater academic success. Some benefits of small class sizes are that the students receive more personal attention. Smaller class sizes will help a student that has a learning disability, and the needs of the other students would be met. A small number of students in the classroom can also help with less noise and disruptive behavior. Tracking Tracking seems to be a common practice in the United States, and allows a teacher to work with students that are on the same academic level. The Students are placed together in classrooms by using test scores. Tracking has been around for about a century and is used in most schools across the United States. I found out in my research that there are different types of tracks. For example there is high or low tracking, all the students in each class are on the same level. Tracking seems to be a good idea, but in reality it seems to be very complicated. One of the main problems is that the students in low tracks are largely populated with minority students, and the low tracks are not good for a student’s development. I also found out that it affects the teachers in different ways. Teachers teach in different styles to educate their students. The students in high track classrooms are taught the content of the curriculum and the students in the lower track classrooms just briefly cover different subjects. In other words the high track students are challenged and the low track students are not. Low track teachers seem to have low expectations of their students (Callahan 2005) and high track classrooms have a positive attitude which helps the students desire to learn (Hotter 2004) The classroom has become very culturally diverse with students from all over the world. I found out that the students who were in the low tracks were predominately minorities, and the high track students were Caucasians and Asians. The text book states† In a classic study done in the 1970s, Ray Rest Observed a kindergarten class in an all-black urban school. By the eighth day Of class, the kindergarten teacher, apparently using such criteria as physical Appearance, socioeconomic status, and language usage, had separated her students Into groups of â€Å"fast learners† and â€Å"slow learners. † She spent more time With the â€Å"fast learners† and gave them more instruction and encouragement. The â€Å"slow learners† got more than their fair share of control and ridicule. The children soon began to mirror the teacher’s behavior. As the â€Å"fast learners† Belittled the â€Å"slow learners,† the low-status children began to exhibit Attitudes of self-degradation and hostility toward one another. This teacher’s Expectations, was formed during the first eight days of school, and this shaped the Academic and social treatment of the students in her classroom for the rest of the school year. Records of the grouping that had taken place during the first week of kindergarten which was then passed on to the teachers in the upper grades, providing the basis for further differential treatment. † (Sadker, Zittleman pg. 106. ) This is true because working in the school system you here teachers telling other teachers about the students they have in their classrooms, and what to expect if they come into their classrooms. In conclusion I found out that tracking is not the main problem it has its positive and negative points. I believe that if all students had the equal opportunity of a good early education there would be more students excelling in our schools. For example if all students had the opportunity to attend preschool it would help the students from being put into high or low track groups as all children would have the same opportunity in education my opinion is that detracking would help all students work and learn from each other no matter what their level is in the classroom.

The Underground Man By Fyodor Dostoyevsky - 952 Words

In Notes from the Underground by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, the underground man is a man who is â€Å"living out [his] life in a [his] corner† (2) and is paralyzed by consciousness. The underground man proposes the example of revenge as a way to examine the differences between himself and the man of action; the man of action being a man who can act as opposed to the paralysis of the underground man. The man of action can act, but his position is inconsistent. The underground man thinks he will be miserable regardless of acting or not acting; his belief in determinism causes this and he reasons incorrectly that determinism is true. The man of action and the underground man are determinists who believe all they do is predetermined. They do not believe that they have the ability to commit an action free of any predetermination or influence. All acts that happen are not by the choice of men; instead, the laws of nature are the source of the action. The underground man states â€Å"the laws of nature, the deductions of natural science, mathematics† (8) form a stone wall which cannot be broken. The laws of nature do not require the consent of himself, the underground man thinks, â€Å"it is a case of twice two makes four!† (8). To the underground man the man of action is happy and stupid, whereas the underground man is unhappy and intelligent. The underground man then presents what act necessitates revenge: the act of being slapped in the face. The case of the man of action is then presented.
